Humanity's Infinite Curiosity by Nina - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
For as long as humanity continues to exist, uncertainty will be an inevitable factor in society. There will always be questions we hope to answer and dilemmas we hope to solve. The mysterious qualities of the universe will continue to baffle even the most intellectual individuals, and the glittering stars in the night sky will always hold their secrets. And although we may never know why the stars in the sky really came to exist, or why we have not yet discovered some giant galactic civilization, we have the capability as humans to experience, question, and explore these topics.
Even though it may seem that we will never find the final answer to all our problems, these strange and interesting concepts that govern our world inspire curiosity and constantly encourage individuals to explore and learn more. It is exciting to be able have the ability to absorb the infinite amounts of information around you and seemingly never ending topics only inspire me to search for more information. Through research, books, and even some Youtube videos on scientific theories, I will continue to learn. Expanding my range of perspective and thoughts is the intrinsic reward for learning.
I hope to conduct scientific research as part of my future career because of an interest in gathering evidence for the intricate development of cancer. Cancer cells compete with your own body for survival and trick the body into thinking they are normal. The body does not always recognize the cancer as harmful, but how did cancer evolve in such clever ways as to evade the body’s own defense mechanisms so well? Until the question has been answered, I hope to continue to learn through observation and experience. In addition to cancer development, there are numerous other scientific paradoxes and mysteries that continue to inspire me to research about as well.
A paradox is ultimately a question without a solution. A seemingly reasonable proposition with no definite conclusion. One in particular, the Fermi Paradox, addresses humans’ seemingly isolated existence in a vast universe. With so much probability for life outside our home planet, it is egoistic to believe humans are the only beings capable of surviving. Another paradox is the bizarre evolution of human consciousness. We claim that consciousness has separated us from inanimate objects, but all living and nonliving things in the universe are made of the same essential elements. How did this distinction come to be?
In twenty five years, paradoxical concepts and unexplained scientific theories will still motivate individuals like me to learn. The possibility of parallel universes, the uncharted areas of the ocean, and the questionable power of the black hole in the center of our galaxy are more topics that have yet to been resolved. Time will not eliminate the curiosity that motivates me to search for knowledge. It provides me with a feeling of significance and purpose when I attempt to examine the perplexing workings of the world.
