#GrowingRight by Nina - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

I am in the twelfth grade, and all of my classmates are anticipating graduation. Everyone is excited to start a new chapter of their lives. Not all of them, however, will graduate knowing that what they learned in their least favorite classes could help them in the future. Every subject, and every assignment had a principle attached to it that can be taken for application in life. I feel that earning a diploma or degree is not for bragging; education was essential to the development of several key aspects of my life. My hashtag is #GrowingRight because my education has been a tool for mental, personal, and social growth.
Education has helped my mind to grow. I am now able to understand concepts I could not understand before my education. Information presented in news articles used to be difficult to understand with my limited vocabulary in elementary school. However, as school progressed, I memorized assigned vocabulary words, as well as read classical books. These experiences extended my vocabulary, and my comprehension of news articles was enhanced. Mentally, education has been a tool for growth, and I appreciate the growth I have experienced.
Education has also encouraged my personal growth. I have become a more mature person, ready for my future as an adult, because of education in school. History class has often been one my least favorite classes in school. However, I listened to the lessons presented to me in American history and was impressed by the American colonies’ courage in the revolutionary war to stand up against what they felt was government injustice; they did not keep silent about things they felt were unjust. Being able to elicit courage and evoke change when I feel slighted or wronged is a sign of maturity. My personal growth was affected by my education; this means a great deal to me.
Lastly, I’ve grown socially because of my education. Learning about a wide variety of concepts has enhanced my social skills. As I have matriculated through high school, I have been introduced to complex topics in science and literature; I have been taught to write papers that showed my understanding of complex topics. Because I understand more complex topics, I am able to intelligently converse with and effectively learn from educated adults in my community and abroad. Before being introduced to more weighty concepts than addition, subtraction, and subject-verb agreement, I could not engage in socially and educationally enhancing conversations with ingenious and big-thinking adults. Education has given me social advantages, and that means a lot to me.
Education is important for growth in several aspects of life. My hashtag is #growingright because education to me has been a tool for mental, social, and personal growth. My education has helped me grow mentally by the vocabulary exercises given to me in school. Secondly, education has been an advantageous tool for social interactions with learned adults. Furthermore, as an individual becoming an adult, education has positively influenced my personal courage. Education to me is more than knowledge to simply store; education has been about my wholistic growth, and I am truly #GrowingRight.
