Undying desire for Focus by Nikita - August 2022 Scholarship Essay
From an early age, I have always been easy to distract, whether it is food or toys that drew my attention from my work, I could not focus. As I grew, technology became more available and advanced. I quickly got access to my own laptop to be able to work digitally which translated to "MORE GAMES!!" in my mind. Not only did I receive a shiny, new laptop, but I was also gifted a flashy I-phone which was meant for emergencies and communication, however, this phone was just another, more personalized, and advanced form of distraction.
As my workload went from minimal to absolutely brutal, I learned that my study habits needed to change. I could no longer do the bare minimum because I got too distracted to do the most. Much to my dislike, I continued to check my phone every 2 minutes to see if I got a new update from my friends or if I got a new notification from my crush. Turning off my ringer and keeping my phone far from me proved to be useless due to the fact that my thoughts were clouded by the curiosity of who might have texted me.
The advancement of technology has simultaneously been the worst and best thing to happen to humanity. It creates the opportunity for constant communication but also creates constant distractions from numerous sources such as Snapchat, messages, and Instagram. The world, including myself, is too consumed by technology that they fail to recognize their tasks in the physical world. My tasks are too important to be ignored. I need to complete my essays for English and must complete my worksheets in Pre-Calculus in order to maintain good grades. I cannot afford to be distracted, yet I do, similar to everyone my age.
In the upcoming year, I am going to strive to distance myself from all matters virtual in order to prioritize my grades and education. Whether it be by giving my phone to my parents for safekeeping or deleting social media, it needs to be done. I must focus, and I must do it before I can no longer change my ways and suffer in college.
