Career Influences
Throughout my teenage years, there have been many experiences that have influenced my decision of wanting to be a nurse anesthetist. One experience that is a major factor in my decision is one of my favorite jobs, a childcare provider. I consider this my favorite job because I take care of children ranging from ages six months to twelve years old. Not only do I get to make the kids happy by playing games with them, but I am also able to make them feel better when they do not feel good, are hurt, or are upset. In my opinion, being able to wipe a child’s tears away and see them replace their frown with a smile is one of the best feelings in the world.
Similarly to my childcare experience, I participate in a community service club, Big and Littles Are Stronger Together (B.L.A.S.T.), where we help underprivileged children who do not have the best home lives. We go to some of the local elementary schools to talk and do arts and crafts with kids who are specifically chosen because of their difficult home lives. Our goal is to get them to open up to us and talk about their feelings. However, our main goal is to be a part of their day that they look forward to and a person in their lives that make them happy and feel cared for. My heart fills with joy every time I enter the building and see the kids running at us with excitement. To give a child attention and show that you care is one of the most important things a person can do. Being able to see such a sad and quiet child turn into a smiling, laughing, and talkative one is such a heartwarming experience. Between babysitting and B.L.A.S.T., I knew for sure that I wanted to go into the medical field. To be a nurse anesthetist and have the ability to take away a person’s pain is one of the most rewarding and important jobs that I cannot wait to be a part of.
