2016: New Year, New Start, New Me by Nicole - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Having my first semester of college completed, I now understand what I need to adjust to become a better student. One New Year’s resolution is related to academics while the other is being active on the university campus. I found better study tactics and involvement at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. By improving my grades and impact in my community, I will become a better student in 2016.
Starting at Benedictine University this fall, I wasn’t sure what to expect from college. At first I did struggle in majority of my classes. I couldn’t find study tactics and had a hard time with some of the topics. I was able to turn most of my grades around and realize what I’d want to do with my life. I know that this semester will go much more smoothly and with exceptional grades. I’m hoping to make the Dean’s List and I believe I will because I will truly push myself to excel in my courses. I’m proud of how far I’ve come with my grades and I know it will help me with a bright future.
While at school, I signed up for multiple clubs and organizations but my attendance has been very weak. I am striving this semester to commit to a few organizations and know what clubs I will do. I want my involvement to grow at Benedictine because I enjoy getting involvement and volunteering. I was a bit shy on doing things on my own but college has helped me evolve into a brave student. I will be able to be more proactive and engaged in my university’s activities.
College may not have started out the way I wanted but I realize early what needs to be changed. My academics are truly important to me and I really want to see myself excel. With the involvement at school, I know it will make my personality more engaging and I’ll find many opportunities to give back to my community. My New Year’s resolutions are going to be accomplished by the end of this semester and continued on through the rest of my education.
