The Start Of A New Year by Nicole - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

My New Years Resolution to help me become a better student in 2016 is to apply for internships and part – time jobs. Both of these are options out there for everyone and should be taken advantage of. It’s an experience that shouldn’t be overlooked. My first internship was in a legal department, which provided me with so much knowledge that I’ve found useful to use in my classes I take today. In 2016, I would like to continue taking advantage of these opportunities. You learn how to adapt to a professional atmosphere and get treated like an adult. You become independent which is such an amazing feeling.
I personally look at taking part in an internship or part – time job as making a transition from childhood to adulthood. You are getting your feet wet in a world that you are going to make a living out of one day. The skills you gain will stay with you forever. A few of these skills include leadership, responsibility, time management and knowledge of the field you’re working with. The internship or part – time job can really get you thinking of the career path you want to follow. I know my internship defiantly confirmed my dreams of becoming a lawyer.
Employers also find impressive the experience you have on your resume when you graduate from college. 95% of employers explain how experience is a big factor they put into consideration when deciding on who they want to hire. Having an internship or part – time job under your belt gives you an advantage. You’ll also have greater confidence walking into interviews or simply just applying to jobs. Advice given to me by many adults was to build up your resume, gain as much knowledge as you can and apply everything to the world around you. It’s one of the best pieces of advice I was ever given.
