The Class of the "Real World" by Nicole - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

Going to school for the majority of a student’s life has taught her everything except how to live life after school. Going to school has given her the opportunity to become a mathematician, scientist, historian, artist, musician, and translator all at the same time; however, how does she learn the knowledge the common adult needs to know to stay out of trouble.

She learns how to prove triangles congruent, but how does she balance her spending with her income? She learns about imaginary numbers, but what about the real numbers, like the debts she’ll have to pay off after getting loans to go to college or pay a mortgage? Preparedness is key, and a class at school can help provide the knowledge youngsters should know before entering the “real world”.

Such a subject will include information on how to pay taxes, save money, and make decisions by measuring the pros and cons of the options. Paying off debts and mortgages, and making investments, like buying a house or car, will also be included in the course. In fact, according to the article American Household Credit Card Debt Statistics: 2015, between credit card debt, mortgages and student loans, American consumers owe about $11.86 trillion in debt. With a curriculum designed to teach students how to manage their money, this number can be lowered. Additionally, the students will learn about insurance, like health insurance or car insurance, and why these investments might be beneficial to them.

Furthermore, the students will learn how to find a career and be successful. With the assistance from the class, they can explore their options and discover opportunities given to them in their communities to make their goals and dreams realities. They will also be given time to learn about finding and applying to colleges that suit their preferences the best and implement their desired futures.

Evidently, by taking this course, the students will leave school with the knowledge and confidence they need for a successful and less stressful future.
