How to Be a Person by Nicole - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

An education serves to improve society and provide the world with well-prepared individuals who are able to think critically, share their passions, and spark change. An education is not to learn about history, science, math, and english separately so that one can get a job. An education is to take those subjects and apply them to the real world. How does history influence math? How can science and english work together? Through learning about these subjects and thinking critically, one learns how to be a functioning member of society. One learns what they are passionate about. One learns how they can influence the world around them.

I believe that an education is one of the most important things in life. A lot of people say and believe this, but I really think advocating for education is important. Before attending college and pursuing my own higher education, I was naive and close-minded. Nobody wants to admit this about themselves, but really, I was not ready to end my education yet. I was not fully developed. In college, not only have I learned a lot of fascinating information, but I have learned how to be a person. If I had to say what the purpose of an education was in a few words, I would say that it is to learn how to be a person in the real world. I have found many things I am passionate about. I have become much more diversified and aware of things going on around me. I know how to express myself and share my thoughts respectfully. I know that when my time as a college student is over, I will be ready to spark change and think critically and share my passions with others. I am ready to share my education with the world. I think this is what the purpose of an education is.
