What's your blood type? by Nicole - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

I’ve always known that blood type was important in human beings, but I never knew that it could affect a woman’s womb and the life of her child. One parent having a negative rhesus factor and the other having a positive in their blood type could cause the mother’s body to reject her child. That is if the mother and baby turn out to have opposite factors. Though it could easily be fixed by simply getting shot treatments, it is something that could not be detected. Which is interesting because usually couples don’t talk about their blood types and all these factors before they plan to have a child. Most couples discuss genetics, diseases, and things of such common likes before planning to have a baby. The rhesus factor in the couples blood type can be a big deal and at the same time not so much. It can be a small factor, that once the baby is born there is no worrying about it anymore. Taking anatomy and physiology my senior year in high school really influenced me to choose my major in college. Like this interesting fact, and the thought of a “salty banana,” opened my eyes to see, there’s a lot people don’t know until it’s too late.
