Why attending school is important to me by Nicole - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
I am the type of person who loves to help others. Not to be dramatic, but I feel that. Whatever career I pursue, it has to involve helping others. My dream is to open my non-profit organization here in my city. I want to open a shelter for people in need, and I want it to be a place where anyone can come here for help, no matter the circumstance.
I think the reason why I want to help others is that a couple of years ago, is because of my therapist Melodi. I was sexually abused by one of my family members. I had just turned seven at that time I remember because it was a month after my dad passed away. The abuse continued until I was about ten years old. For the longest time, I thought it was my fault that I should have spoken up. I use to ask myself all the time, why didn't I speak up? I didn't speak up until I was 15 years old of age and let me tell you ever since then, I have never felt so strong. I felt so vulnerable when I was telling my mother about the abuse, but at the same time, I felt so strong letting her know. I started to go to therapy at National's Children Advocacy Center here in Huntsville, AL. Because of my therapist Mrs. Melodi she has taught me to love myself. My dream is to open my own non-profit shelter. I plan to get a degree in business management and that's why it's important to me to go to school.
