Confidence makes or breaks you by Nicole - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my time at Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy, I have learned many lessons. From those lessons, I would choose only one to tell the members of the incoming freshmen class: learn some study strategies. As you progress through your high school career, classes become increasingly difficult at Jose Marti because almost all of your classes end up becoming honors or AP classes. Confidence from middle school will transfer to your high school life, and you might think “I don’t have to study because I never studied before and did just fine!”, however, this fixed mindset is incorrect and you will surely see the results of it in your grades.
When you take your first AP class at Jose Marti, the teacher will be welcoming, but will also state that your success in the class is dependent on the effort put into it. That effort means how much time you spend studying the material, the quality of your assignments, etc. Study strategies may be difficult to acquire for some, but they are necessary in order to effectively take in the material. One study strategy that I suggest is to use mind maps to outline the subjects and make it easier to tackle the depth of the material. Having study strategies is also part of a growth mindset, which enhances your skills as an individual, and reminds you that your skillset is always growing.
While walking through the halls at Jose Marti, I would hope that these freshmen would learn from and observe the many different teachers that they’ll be having, and that they take these classes seriously. You must study and put forth your maximum effort, no matter what. These classes are no easy feat, and they will help these students have a head start in their college life since these are college-level classes.
