The Gift by nicole - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

In the novel, The Gift, by Paul Richard Evans, Collin is a young boy with a special ability to heal others. This sounds like a great ability to have, but there is one catch, Collin has Leukemia, and whenever he heals another person, it makes him more ill. When the word gets out about Collin's skill everyone is trying to get to him.

I find Collin to be an inspiration, because, not only does he not expect anything in return for his good deeds, but he is weaker for them. He is even selfless enough to die in the end of the book to save someone's life.

Collin's kind and giving nature has inspired me to be more generous in my daily life. From volunteering and donating to simple tasks such as holding the door open for a stranger or helping someone pick up something they dropped, I have been influenced to become a better person. I believe that everyone can help people, and that we must try to do so at every opportunity. I hope to inspire those around me to do the same. It is a chain reaction, and sometimes something as simple as a little boy in a novel can inspire a big change in the attitude of our community.
