A Community That Changed It All by Nicole - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

As a junior in college I am starting to think about what is coming next and how I can appropriately prepare for that. I get so focused on what the future holds and don’t spend enough time reflecting on what has happened and what I am thankful for. As I took time to reflect on this question many things came to mind. Some things include the Psychology Department that I’m a part of, the professors I have, and the time I’ve spent in America’s Finest City (San Diego). But the one part of college that I am most thankful for is the community. My university only has 2300 undergraduate students. This has given me such a unique opportunity to be a part of a community unlike any other. There is love, support, and friendship at every corner.

I have also been able to find my niche in the school that has offered me a deeper sense of belongingness. I have been encouraged when school and life get hard. I have been picked up when I fall down. And I’ve been loved at every step of the way. The people I have encountered are the most loving people I have ever met. I have learned so much from them and the way they come around each other through all the ups and downs. The coolest part is I still have a year and a half left. I will continue to grow deeper in current friendships and still have time to build new ones.

When I leave college I will have gained not only an irreplaceable education, but more importantly irreplaceable friends. I heard that college is where you find your friends for life. I was skeptical about that as I entered in as a freshman. However, after being a part of such a great community, I am excited to attest to that cheesy saying. I am beyond lucky and honored to have been able to be invited into so many lives that have impacted me beyond belief.
