Learned Skills by Nicole - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

Most people who are on their way to college are looking for the 'college experience,' whether this be meeting new friends, living away from home, or finally receiving freedom. These memories they will look back at with a smile and be thankful they made the decisions they did. Although that may add to my upcoming college experience, I believe acquiring new skills will be what I am most thankful for.
As my major, I've decided to earn my bachelor's in nursing. In order to both become and be a good nurse I must rely on the skills I will learn in college to carry out daily assignments. My patients' lives will essentially be in my hands, and it will be my job to ensure that my patients are given the correct care and treatment. College will teach me essential skills such as, how to insert a catheter, perform the correct dressing for a specific wound, or assist with tube feedings. I will have to rely on the knowledge of the skills I've accumulated in college for my entire nursing career. Having a good educational background from college will help me to excel with this and I will be forever grateful for having the opportunity of both learning these skills and being able to perform them.
At the moment I attend a technical school, alongside my regular high school, where I am a student in their health careers program. There I have learned skills that include how to take vital signs, give bed baths, and assist in patient ambulating. I am thankful for already being familiar with these crucial skills, which will help me to excel during college. However, I am relying on my college education to teach me the remainder of the skills I must know.
Skills are vital to a nurse's career, so I know I will be very thankful for receiving a good education that will prepare me and stick with me throughout my nursing career. While some may see having a good time in college or making new friends as the college experience they are looking for, I am searching for a valuable educational background that will last me a lifetime. That, I believe, is the best experience I could ask for and give praise to.
