Dinner with the First Female Pilot by Nicole - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
I could remember doing a research project on Amelia Earhart in elementary school, and her story has caught my interest ever since. As a child Earhart was looked at as "different," considering that she never wanted to conform to the expectations of society. Amelia was headstrong and determined to make a difference in society, and she used these traits to create a lasting impression on the world. Amelia was able to become the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. However, many are not aware that she was also a school teacher, an author, and an equal rights activist. I believe that Amelia Earhart was an important figure in American history, and her life has contributed to equality between men and women as well. If I were to have dinner with Amelia, I would have many questions for her. First off, I found it so uplifting that she was determined to become a female aviator. At times, she was thought of as just the passenger with co-pilot, friend, and husband "George Putnam." However, with Putnam's help, Earhart was able to finally achieve the utter respect she deserved from society. Many people underestimated that a woman would be able to become a pilot and control an aircraft by herself, but Amelia was able to prove people wrong.
Amelia was always referred to as unique, and she did not have the same mannerism that most women followed during the early 1900's. I would ask Amelia if she ever felt out of place or looked down upon for just saying things how it is, or by going against society's morals by becoming a female aviator. However, I do know that by doing so she set a precedent for women today by showing the world that women can be anything they want in the world. With people like Amelia Earhart, the world was able to see that women can achieve great success, and should not be looked down upon for doing so. After flying across the Atlantic, Amelia was able to write a book discussing her great success, and to help contribute to equal rights between men and women. Amelia was soon not only considered a brave risk taker, but also a well-respected woman who hoped to bring change to the world.
While Amelia Earhart is a well-known figure in history today, there is a mystery forever tied to her life story. On Earhart's journey across the Pacific attempting to complete a circumnavigation flight, she disappeared and was never heard from or found again. There have been numerous controversies over whether pieces of her plane were found, but ultimately her flight remains a mystery to this day. This mysterious flight has demonstrated how technology has changed and improved over time, because her connections with people were cut off during the flight. Amelia was fearless, and passed away doing something that she was passionate about, but it shouldn't have been the case. Many people cannot understand how she and the plane were never seen again, and it still remains a question whether she did survive the crash for some time or not. If I could have dinner with Amelia Earhart, I would thank her for her acts of bravery and for contributing to the equal rights movement with her courageous actions.
