My Path to Finance by Nicholas - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

I am a Myocarditis survivor, National Honor Society student, African American male. Student Government Officer, a model of resilience and perseverance who is working to fulfill my financial needs to cover the costs of tuition, books, and other fees associated with my future studies as I enter college next Fall. I have always had a strong affinity toward how to accumulate wealth to help my family and others, However, I became more eager after seeing the continuous bills and the stress of paying hospital bills caused my parents. I felt deep guilt, although my parents would tell me that the most important thing to them was having me be alive. While I know my parents value me more than any bill, it made me think of how they could have saved more before this situation as well as had other streams of income to help them. I come from a family that values honesty, treating others fairly, and hard work and I feel that people in my community deserve to know more about ways to accumulate wealth so that medical situations won't be as stressful.

Unfortunately, as a sophomore in high school, I suddenly fell ill, and doctors thought I might not survive, but I knew with the right mindset, prayer, and the support of my family, nothing was impossible, including my desire to go to college on an Academic Scholarship. Although I was hospitalized and missed five months of school, on days I felt well, I completed my school assignments and ended the year with a 4.0 GPA. Because I was born into a family that doesn't accept excuses, I know what it means to persevere. I am committed to achieving my educational goals, just as I was then.

I have chosen the path of Engineering and Finance for several reasons. Both of these fields will nurture my love for understanding the way things work as well as how to improve a concept or thing.

Engineering is a passion of mine because of my interest in problem-solving, my desire to create Innovative solutions, and my appreciation of the field's technical aspects. I would like to have more innovative ways to teach people in my community good saving and spending habits.

Engineering is a passion of mine for many reasons. I have always been drawn to problem-solving, and engineering provides an opportunity to do that in a meaningful way. I enjoy the challenge of finding creative solutions to complex problems, and the satisfaction of seeing my ideas come to life. I also appreciate the technical aspects of engineering, from mathematics and physics to programming and design.

I have always been interested in mathematics and science, and engineering provides a way to apply those skills in practice. I have a natural curiosity about how things work and how I can make them better. I enjoy learning the principles of engineering and applying them to real-world problems. I am also passionate about creating innovative solutions to those problems.

Finance fulfills my interest in financial markets and helps me understand the financial system
and feeds my desire to help others achieve financial security. Finance has always held a special place in my heart. From a young age, I was fascinated by the stock market and the idea of making money from investing. As I grew older, my interest in finance only grew stronger. I began to understand the importance of financial literacy and the power of financial markets. Majoring in finance has allowed me to explore the world of financial markets and gain a better understanding of the financial system. I can then take this knowledge and more securely be sure to start teaching other students at younger ages about the stock market. There are so many paths I can take as I learn about the different types of investments, the different markets, and the different strategies used by investors. This will also help me to have a better understanding of the risks associated with investing and the importance of diversification.
The greatest fulfillment being a Finance major will lend me is the opportunity to help others achieve financial security. Providing financial advice to friends and family and helping them make informed decisions about their investments will allow me to see my community grow. Finance is an invaluable tool in my life.

Dealing with the challenge of fighting Myocarditis and having a near-death experience has certainly taught me the value of being thankful for each day and gives me the inner drive to strive for what I really want. As a member of society, I want to leave the world better than I found it. Using my college path as a Finance major allows me to learn how to manage and invest money and in return, teach those who may not have the knowledge or resources to do the same. Being afforded the opportunity is not something I take for granted, so I understand the importance of giving back to the community.

Majoring in Engineering and Finance will help me continue my growth path while serving others, which is a core value of mine. I am Nicholas Coleman. If given the opportunity to be the recipient of this scholarship, I vow to make you tremendously proud.
