Have you ever wanted to learn a language that is prevalent in both the Business and in the Entertainment Industry? If so, then Japanese is the go- to subject. I personally enrolled at Varsity Tutors at the end of October in 2021. I was amazed by the amount of effort and appreciation the teacher demonstrated in teaching me the Japanese language. By the end of the session I was convinced that a Japanese Language/ History class would be something that could create an actively engaging and interesting learning environment.

If I had the opportunity to design a new elective class I would design a Japanese Language/ History class. This class would be beneficial to students who have the desire to expand their understanding and knowledge of another culture. It would provide a unique opportunity to get to know the Japanese culture on a deeper level whilst also introducing similarities between students’ daily lives and those of a Japanese person . This elective class could prove to be fun as comparing your life to that of a medieval Samurai would be very entertaining as well as informational . I feel having a class like this would be appreciated by students especially with the rise in popularity of anime- which is a Japanese cartoon genre. Furthermore, learning the history behind Japan would bring to light the influences made in the cartoons that are loved and enjoyed by many today.

From just one class at Varsity Tutors I learned to read and write in two prevalent Japanese writing systems, Hiragana and Katakana. It was a culturally invigorating experience that I will never forget. I am sure that other students who share my same interest in this beautiful culture will be drawn to an elective course like this; deepening their knowledge, appreciation, and love for Japanese culture just as I did.
