The importance of Higher Education for Black Youth by Nia - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
After high school my biggest educational goal is attending college but specifically
attending an HBCU which is a Historically Black College or University.
I believe that attending an HBCU is the correct pathway for several reasons. It is proven that HBCUs provide quality education along with several other positive factors. It would also be good for me to attend an HBCU because I live in Minnesota and as a Black person, I am part of an underrepresented group in a state mostly populated by white people. Being in an underrepresented group means that educators and others in positions of authority don’t always understand my perspective on issues. Being in an environment where this is not always the case would allow me to focus on my education. An HBCU will provide me with this opportunity to feel like the majority rather than the minority.
I plan to major in criminal justice because that major has always been interesting to me for many reasons. It would allow me to eventually become a victim advocate or an FBI Agent. A victims advocate is person who plays the role of both a lawyer and therapist. Their main goal is to provide comfort and support to those who are victims of terrible crimes. Being an FBI agent would allow me the opportunity to support people in different ways where there have been crimes or bad situations. I also have a unique interest in helping missing or murdered children and women who are Black, Indigenous, Latinx other women of color.
This scholarship will assist me in fulfilling my goals.
