The Most Valuable Trait in Being a Leader by Nia - December 2021 Scholarship Essay

Leader- “The person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country.” When we think of this word, we think of people like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. We think of people that step up to the plate and create a clear and compelling direction, providing aid to others so that they can reach their goals. Though they may not all be the same, each leader possesses an array of traits that contribute to the very reason why they hold the title of a “leader." Whether the trait may be humility or accountability, it is a trait the leader retains, thus ultimately extensive in allowing them to step up to the plate and create a clear and compelling direction, providing aid to others so that they can reach their goals. And though not always verbalized, different people possess different traits that attribute to them being a leader. However, without one specific trait, success is not ensured. I believe being communicative is the trait that best describes a leader; it is key to becoming a successful leader, overriding the importance of any other trait.
To be communicative means to be open and willing to talk about distinct topics so that the transfer of information is possible. Day in and day out, leaders use their communication skills to express themselves and facilitate empathy with their followers. When communication between people is good, a leader can efficiently interact with their followers, therefore, will be successful in inspiring and motivating them. Communication is like a circuit, it is the solution in getting the flow of information to occur, granting access for a goal to be attained. Apart from talking being the biggest aspect of communication, the listening element in communication is just as dire. A leader who listens to the needs and opinions of other people is someone who will gain a great understanding of the perspective of other people. To make people feel heard and show an interest in what they have to say contributes to this immense communicative trait, as communication should not appear to be one-sided; that's just a speech. Unlike many other traits, communication isn’t just a good trait for a leader to have, it’s the most necessary.
