Puppy Doctor by Nia - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

On Christmas Day, 2006, I received the best gift a kid could ever ask for. He was 5 pounds and a mix of black, white, grey and tan. I named him Chock after the mascot of my basketball team and we were inseparable.

As I set out to prove to my parents that I could take care of my Christmas puppy, I began to realize that some things were wrong with him. After a little playing, he was unusually exhausted. He did not have much of an appetite, but when I gave him a belly-rub, I noticed his belly was swollen like he just ate a lot of food. I was scared.

I told my parents that Chock needed to go to the doctor. After hearing me out, they agreed and set an appointment for the very next day. I could not wait to hear what the diagnosis would be and more importantly how the doctor would heal my puppy. I did not sleep and prayed all night that God would help the doctor make Chock all better.

The appointment was 9:00 am. My heart was beating fast and I began to cry. I asked my dad, "What if the doctor can't fix Chock?" My dad replied, "have faith." It turned out that Chock had a case of heart worms. The doctor gave us some pill samples and said that Chock would be ok. Two weeks and 14 pills later, Chock's stomach shrunk. He had an appetite and more importantly he played with me without getting tired.

I was so grateful that the doctor healed him. I told my dad that I wanted to be a puppy doctor when I grew up. He said, "a puppy doctor is called a Veterinarian."

I was only 6 years old and my desire to be a "puppy doctor" still persists today. I want little children to have faith in me and my ability to heal their pets just like a Veterinarian did for me.
