Due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others by Nia - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

“We can take this outside!” Robin screamed at the top of her lungs. Tension had reached its peak between Robin and David. It was so thick you could cut it in the air with a knife. One minute everyone is calmly sitting in Physics class learning about forces and the next minute two students are ready to get at each other’s throats. The conflict had been building for a while. Robin and David always had something to say behind each other’s back, but this time Robin took it to a physical level and punched David in the arm as she headed to her desk. David was fine with words, but felt disrespected by her touching him and decided to voice his opinion. Robin did not agree with his words and decided to fight back with words of her own. Bickering, cussing before the class knew it, Robin and David were out of their seats. My Physics teacher, Mr. George, could not believe what was happening. Robin was on her way to David, but before she could reach him my teacher grabbed and rushed her outside of the classroom while David continued his verbal assault.
When Mr. George re-entered the classroom he expressed how disappointed he was in the both of them to the class. He mostly hated David’s threats of physical harm towards Raven. “I don’t care how mad you are, you never threaten to hurt a woman!” Mr. George yelled. I had never seen my teacher get so angry. Not only was he mad that a fight was about to take place, he was more furious that a fight was about to occur between a female and male student.
As a female hearing those words, I gained more respect for my teacher’s values. I also gained a higher respect for myself. It does not matter whether someone is jokingly calling me names, teasing or hitting me I should not be treated that way. I should always hold myself at a high standard and have others, especially men reach the level of respect I have for myself.
