Baseball and my future by Nevan - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Numbers. Stats. Plays. Whether on the field or watching, I am fascinated by sports numbers especially in baseball. From the time I was a little kid, I loved playing baseball. If not playing, I was watching or listening to baseball games. My family would try to quiz me on teams or players and I would surprise them with what I knew. I knew the depth charts on teams across the country; I knew who the new guy, just brought up from AAA was; I knew who was on a hot streak and who was struggling in their last few at bats. Baseball has always been a special part of my life.

Almost every second of my life has been surrounded by baseball. Even when I am doing un unfamiliar task, I will relate it to baseball or incorporate baseball. My love of the game has always had a hold on me. When I think about it on a deeper level, the love that I have for the game today dates back to my early childhood when I would wake up early before school. I would get up and out of bed at 7 am so I could watch “Quick Pitch.” It is a morning baseball show recapping the previous days baseball news. This television morning show was a staple of my childhood mornings. Another thing I think of when looking back at my childhood and baseball is the piece that my dad played in my love for the game. At a very young age, my dad started coaching me. He coached me in baseball until I began high school. All along we would discuss the history of the game, the current events and collecting baseball cards and autographs. My dad helped instill a love for the game at a young age.

I have grown the skills and mental game since that young age. Knowing that becoming a professional athlete is such a rarity, I have thought of ways that I can incorporate my love for sports into my career. People have always said that I have learned my people skills from my mom. She has taught me how to form quick relationships with others. We both can sell you anything or turn anyone’s bad day around. That is why I would like to combine these life experiences into a study of the field of Sports Management and business. I believe that it is important to love what you do for a living. I believe that my passion for sports, and particularly baseball, will drive my success with a sports team’s front office. Selling tickets or ads, managing concessions, studying the trends in a scouting department, whatever the task, I know that I can translate that through the lens of my passion for sports and be successful, and make the people I work with successful too.
