My Invigorating Mentor by Nekoshia - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
You would think that at 36, I would have life figured out, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I have worked in education for the past 10 years. I was a teacher assistant for two years, a lead teacher for one year, an interventionist for four years, and a psychometrist for the past three years. I have had an array of experiences throughout my career, and without the support of my mentor and boss, I would not have had the courage to step out and use my educational skills in other areas.
I have known my boss and mentor for the past 10 years. When I was hired as an assistant, she told me she did not expect me to stay in that role for two years. She constantly talked with me about returning to school to get a bachelor’s degree. Those conversations were not in vain because I did just that. After returning to school and getting a lead teacher position at the same school, she began conversing with me about getting my teaching license so I could make the maximum amount of money with my years of experience. Needless to say, I did as she advised and obtained my teaching license.
My mentor has been a great influence in my life. She has pushed me to be a better version of myself and placed me in positions to succeed. She has helped me see qualities in myself that I did not know were there. Without the love and support of my boss and mentor, I wouldn’t be the leader I am today. I appreciate her guidance and support over the years.
