Why Medicine? by Neil - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
As part of being a Boy Scout, I’ve been placed in positions where I had to perform emergency first aid when I wasn’t supported by a team of knowledgeable scouts, like a sprained ankle alone in the woods, or a capsized canoe in the middle of a freezing lake. To me, these types of experiences are when opportunity and preparation meet. Combining the ability to stay calm and delegate roles and tasks to be completed, along with being placed in the situation where such skills are invaluable, it provides the ideal circumstances to demonstrate the medical skills I’ve learned and practiced in simulated scenarios.
In a medical context, possessing a calm demeanor alongside adept problem-solving skills would be indispensable. A composed physician not only fosters patient trust but also excels in high-stress situations, enabling swift and accurate diagnoses when absolutely needed. The ability for me to approach medical complexities systematically would equip me to assess symptoms, consider diverse treatments, and make sound decisions, minimizing the potential for errors and ensuring optimal patient care. Along with that, in the realm of medical research, my composed and analytical approach to problem solving would be pivotal in designing experiments, analyzing data, and advancing scientific knowledge, a large factor in what I aim to do with the assistance of a medical education.
For those reasons, I fullheartedly feel I would thrive in the medical industry, where quick thinking and problem solving skills can mean the difference between success and failure.
