Saint Joseph University Brotherly Love by Neanta - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

Surprisingly the most interesting lesson I learned in class was not related to the topic that was being discussed at the time. The lesson I learned was in a Drugs and Alcohol class at Saint Joseph University for incoming freshmen during orientation. The lecture was talking about how to prevent alcohol poisoning and alcohol drinking limits for BMI.  At that moment the upperclassmen who were students at Saint Joseph and were showing us around stepped in and decided to talk about their experiences with helping each other and the family bond at Saint Joseph’s. I found it rather interesting and astonishing that the students at Saint Joseph would go out of their way to make sure that their fellow classmates made wise decision when going out to parties. I loved the fact that the students at Saint Joseph made it a policy to watch over each other and protect one another. The major lesson I learned was not about preventing alcohol poisoning or the types of drugs that are narcotics, although I did take note of that; I found that the most important and interesting lesson I learned was about the brotherly love that Saint Joseph displayed which should be a major aspect of the mentality of Philadelphia. I learned that a fellow Saint Joseph University student would always be there to help me if I have a drinking, drug, or just a plain academic issue. They will be there for me in my time of financial need or in my time of depression. This was an important lesson to me because it inspired me to apply this kind of mentality to my career choice and life.
I knew that when I entered college I wanted to help those in need so I majored in biology but I did not know what I wanted to do as a career choice. Once I attended this class in orientation I knew that I wanted to become a physical therapist. I want to be by my patient’s side through all of their pain and growth just like the students at Saint Joseph University. I want to know that I am doing all that I can to make a difference in someone’s life and demonstrate that same brotherhood that Saint Joseph University demands. From the lesson I learned at orientation I also knew that I wanted to apply the same brotherhood to my family life. I found a greater determination to do well in college to become successful in life and help my brother in his quest to go to college and pay for his tuition. The lesson I learned at Saint Joseph University’s freshman orientation was to apply their comrade to my life and support those in need.
