Shooting My Shot by Nazilya - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

As former hockey player Wayne Gretzky once mentioned, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. I firmly believe in the meaning behind this quote, because it’s simple. If one decides not to take any chances, despite how impossible they seem, then they are 100 percent guaranteed to not succeed.
On the other hand, one who takes the opportunity has a heck of a bigger chance in accomplishing their goal, even if they don’t succeed. There is a difference between refusing to take a chance and knowing it’s not going to work out, versus taking a shot and having even the slightest chance of succeeding. If I had a senior quote this would be it, because it makes sense in any aspect of life. Asking to borrow something, entering a competition, or even buying a lottery ticket will get someone further in life than someone who stubbornly decides these chances are not worth their time.
Knowing where I want to be in life, it is important for me to take chances and shoot my shot, especially since I want to pursue a career in medicine. Persistence is key in life, and if everyone in the yearbook saw my quote, they would already have a head start in life as opposed to someone who doesn’t care to take an opportunity. It is time for everyone to look past their fears, and simply shoot their shot.
