My Journey Towards Choosing a College Major by Natalie - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my school career, I have always tried very hard in my classes; my grades have been something I can be proud of, and have a sense of fulfillment in. I always knew that after high school I would continue my education and go to college, which is another reason why I tried so hard, however, I have never truly known what my topic of study would be.
For a while, I thought about going into education. I have volunteered with kids for many years at my church and even got a job at an after-school care. Going into education still interests me, I love the idea of getting to foster the minds of children just like so many teachers have done for me.
I also really enjoy helping people, so I thought about majoring in Nursing. This would provide me with a stable job and the opportunity to support people in a time of difficulty in their life. Sadly I do not have a strong stomach so healthcare is pretty much out of the question for me. Despite this, I have a strong drive to help people in any way I can.
Wanting to help people, but having a weak stomach has led me to the biopharmaceutical industry, this is an area I have recently gotten very interested in. Not only would I be able to help people by making life-saving medicine, but it also would not require me to see the gruesome side of helping people medically. During the first semester of my senior year, I was able to take a BioWorks class through my community college, which not only allowed me to earn my BioWorks certification but, it also increased my intrigue in this industry.
Although I have not completely decided what I am going to do once I am done with my college education I believe that majoring in science and getting my associates in science will be the best decision for me going forward. I believe that as I continue to learn and grow as a person, I will find my calling which will always involve helping others and most likely working in the biopharmaceutical industry.
