Student Council and its Positive Impact on Young Adults by Natalie - June 2018 Scholarship Essay
For the past four years of my high school career, I had the option to take student council as an elective. Because the class was not graded, there were only two types of students who participated in the class. The first type were students who were studious and cared about what went on in the school. The second type were students who needed another class to meet their credit requirements. I believe that all high school students should take student council for three reasons; enjoyable school involvement, community volunteer experience, and expanded self-discipline.
First, by making student council a required class for all high schoolers, students could enjoy specialized school events. In my small school, the PTO had disbanded and the minor school events were left to the student council to plan. By being on the student council, students had a voice about these events and could tailor them to fit their wants, within approval by the adult supervisor.
Second, if student council was a required class, students could experience more community involvement. My school regularly gives recognition to local charities and giving organizations. We have promoted events like "The Walk for Life", "Canstruction", and "Operation Christmas Child." These promotional events are scheduled by the student council and the members are encouraged to attend each one they promote.
Thirdly, as a past-officer in student council, I can attest that students learn self-discipline by being a member. I was the student council secretary for two years and being so, I took the notes, managed the member contact information, and sent student council emails. Being responsible for these things gave me a sense of ownership and a drive to complete my tasks.
In conclusion, student council, while not being graded, was an extremely motivating class. By being involved in a student body, I had a part to play in the events of my school. I would suggest that every school, no matter the students within, make student council a required class for high school students.
