Adventure of a Lifetime: Success by Natalie - November 2017 Scholarship Essay
The light of the “buckle your seat belt” sign lit up in red, signaling that the plane, was soon to be landing back into my home country. After spending almost 24 hours traveling from Italy back to the United States. I have had time to contemplate my exchange and how it has influenced the way I think and how it has positively impacted my future.
Firstly, it is essential to know that studying abroad is not an easy task to accomplish. This experience required strength and bravery. It was difficult. It was also the best thing I have experienced in life. The adversity comes with many benefits, including many towards the future of college education.
Studying abroad is a powerful experience that builds personal growth and development. Before I went to study abroad, I had wanted to major in dermatology. However, after returning from my exchange year, I realized that trying to accomplish being a dermatology was the worst thing for me. Now, I am planning to major in International Business, two things that really interest me: other countries and business.
An American who I had met while I was abroad had originally planned to only obtain her bachelors in psychology. After spending a semester experiencing a different style of learning she decided that she enjoyed going to school and is now on the way to her master’s degree. For her, studying abroad allowed her to see a different side of her major (psychology) that she was not exposed to at home.
In personal experiences, I have returned home with a more willingness to pursue more in my future career. Before studying abroad, I was terrified to attend college far away from home. However, immediately after arriving home from Italy, I applied to a college 4 hours away from home so that I can have a more successful education.
