Learning Opportunities Through Teamwork by Natalia - March 2024 Scholarship Essay

As the student body president at Benton High School last year I had the opportunity to work with the class president on a project. The assignment given to us from our school teacher was to plan the school assembly for the end of the year. I was absolutely excited for the opportunity presented; however, both the class president and I had two completely different visions for the assembly. Being the perfectionist, I had to have a plan for every minute of the assembly whereas our class president just wanted to go with the flow and not worry about the organization or timing of it. This was a bit frustrating because as I mentioned I am a bit of a precisionist. So, I did what came naturally and took charge by talking with her on suggestions about how we can divide the work and come together at the end of each day to show one another what had been completed. My part was to be in charge of the timing of everything while her part was to come up with the music and games. This seemed to have worked best! In the end the assembly was a success and everything went according to plan.

Needless to say this was indeed a learning experience. I learned that in everyday life, you are going to have to work with people that are not only the complete opposite of you but have a different way of thinking. Also, I learned to be more patient and to see things from another's point of view. Although we did not always agree, we were able to come up with a plan and communicated that throughout the assignment.
