Dreams by Natalia - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
Have you ever heard of the saying, "Follow your dreams"? It is very likely that you have, because it is a well-known saying in our society. You may have heard this sentence many times in your life, but might not have really implemented it in your life. Or you may have heard it and let it sink into your being and lived by it. In my situation, I took this famous saying and implemented it in every day of my life. The first person I ever heard this sentence from was my uncle, who is a very strong, driven, and positive individual. He is the type of man that always has something positive to say and gives you wise advice every time he sees you. His positive view of life influenced me to take this quote and live by it, and I'm thankful that I did.
I began my studies in college taking courses that I was interested in. They were the classes that stood out to me, they made me excited to begin class. I realized that all the courses I kept selecting were Sociology classes. It then occurred to me that I had a passion and a deep interest for this subject. So I followed my instincts and decided that I wanted to major in Sociology. After spending my undergraduate in the Sociology field, I feel that I've acquired a wonderful amount of knowledge of this subject. I began using my knowledge of Sociology and applying it in my life. Even when I have conversations with people, I somehow tie in a Sociological aspect to it. Not only do I enjoy talking about it, but I was even excited for my classes and listening to my teachers' lectures, I was never bored. I would sit in class and watch my professors with full focus. I even found inspiration from one of my professors, because I really loved the way he lectured in a philosophical and deep manner. I knew that my time studying Sociology through my undergraduate has changed my life in every way. Not only was I enjoying school but I was applying it in my life.
Despite successfully completing my undergrad in Sociology, I still had people who didn't see value in my degree. Some people degraded the degree because they didn't see dollar signs attached to it. However, I never thought that way. I see value in studying what I am passionate about. I see value in living your life the way you want to live it, no matter what others might think. We have a small time here on Earth, so why live your life according to other's narrowed perspectives? I believe that when you follow your passion, you will be able to expand and make a difference in the world. I say live your life with passion and let that passion fulfill you and empower your life. It has greatly empowered me because I am about to begin my journey into my Master's in Sociology. So yes, the educational advice that I received from my uncle was great advice, and you know why? Because I am spreading his advice through this essay.
