A Trip To Memory Lane by Nardos - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
My family and I woke up early every Sunday morning to attend a church that is dearest to us. When
we’d arrived in just less than an hour of driving, I’d look up at the stone walls, rich with breathtaking
enchantment.
When parents were busy listening to the service, the church had set aside a room upstairs where
children could play, learn and talk without disrupting the priest. While my parents were sitting and
listening to the priest’s sermons, I took it upon myself to babysit and teach the children. At first, I
thought this was merely to occupy them until the service was over. However, it ended up making a
significant impact in my life.
Every Sunday, I would come and read to the children and play games with them. We would even have
conversations ranging from silly to deep conversations. Initially, I didn’t think that I’d ever talk to a child
about “Would you wear wet clothes and dance if someone said you could have ice cream if you do so”. I
found enjoyment in these moments because they took me back to being a kid and I’m grateful that they
brought my imagination back.
I created a welcoming environment that boosted church attendance and allowed the children to get
connected with the church. My teaching efforts encouraged church members to bring friends and to
have a financially sustainable church. This experience allowed me to see the world in a whole new light.
