Letter to a Second Grade Student by Naomi - March 2018 Scholarship Essay
Dear second-grader,
School isn't always fun. But did you know that you should never stop learning, even after school is over? I know that doesn't sound like much fun to you, but it isn't that bad, and, more importantly, it will help you.
When you keep learning, you are more ready for life. I know that doesn't mean much to you now, but maybe I can help you understand. Think about the grown-ups you know. Who do you want to be like? Does that person work hard? Did you know that that person had to learn how to do all those things that you admire?
You can be just like that person. Remember I said they learned how to do what they do. Just like that, you will have to learn how to do it. Does that person you want to be like know a lot more than you do? You bet! Maybe they went to college, or maybe someone taught them how to do what they do, or maybe they taught themselves by reading books or watching other people. That's how they learned, and they are probably still learning about whatever they are good at. Not everyone learns the same way. The important thing is that they worked hard and kept learning: if they hadn't, they would not be smart and successful like they are now.
This is why it is so important to learn. If you want to be like that person you know, or even if you don't know who you want to be like, but you want to be successful, you will have to work hard and keep learning. Learning isn't just about going to school and doing your homework. But doing your schoolwork is a very important part of learning. So, even though you aren't very old now, you can start being the person you want to be when you grow up.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you know how to do that job now? Doesn't it sound hard to learn how to do that job? It doesn't need to be hard. Keep learning, and you will be that person.
