Surroundings by naomi - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
The most important lesson I learned came from my art teacher, Mr.Johnson. He taught me to always pay attention to the things around me. When I needed help with my artwork he would tell me to first take some time and look at the things around the room as inspiration such as previous artwork from former students.
What seemed like a simple lesson a few months ago can now relate to the world experiences today. The simplest things in life are often missed because we choose not to pay attention to the things around us. Whether it immediately impacts us or not.
Being aware of your surroundings is probably the most important thing you can do. Growing up as a child I heard things such as “look for cars before you cross the road” or “keep your distance from strangers when walking to the store”. Back then I didn't understand why I was told that or if it mattered. However, now I know it matters.
I now make observations a priority. Not texting when walking down the street instead taking in the view of the trees and the cars. Not recording an entire concert instead singing and dancing along with the performer. Going for walks in the parks more than I ever used to. You can experience the world better when you look at the bigger picture.
Mr.Johnson an art teacher simply told me to use your surroundings as an advantage and pay attention to things around me. I still follow his advice inside and out the classroom.
