I Only Understand Mathematics by Nantania - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

The academic subject that has sparked my intellectual curiosity and passion for learning is mathematics. I’m convinced that this subject correlates with my strongest personal traits–organization and precision.
My enthusiasm for mathematics goes back to my elementary years. From 4th grade to 8th grade, I was an English-learning student because I lived and studied in Mexico before those grades, so mathematics was the only academic subject I could excel at because of its universal language. I did not need to know English to perform math operations and solve equations, so it was the only academic subject I had control over fairly. Therefore, I became committed to being the most advanced in my math classes. It was a straightforward task–I love mathematics. The satisfaction of figuring out a problem, inputting numbers into different types of functions, and narrowing down my work in an organized manner by neatly arranging my steps that lead up to the final answer, does not compare with anything else.
I do not just use mathematics inside the classroom. One of my all time favorite hobbies is to draw and paint. So whenever I create an art piece–a sketch or a painting– I always ensure that it is well organized with geometry and my handy-dandy ruler. I strictly measure the lengths and heights of items and arrange the spaces in order to create perfect symmetry and balance. It’s a personal preference to have everything neat and in order because it’s an opportunity to be able to control and perfect things.
As I continued to create with this technique, I discovered my passion for constructing buildings and architecture. I began to regularly log into online simulators where I get to be creative and architect an infinite variety of 3-dimensional structures and buildings. Of course, I do not build without using mathematics. It became crucial to be precise with the length, height, and widths of structures and the rooms within them to create an ideal ratio between the structure itself and my online persona.
My pride in utilizing mathematics has fueled my dream of architecting structures in life, so now I am majoring in civil engineering in a four-year university.
