The Use of Leadership Skills in College by Naeemah - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Yes, there are several leadership skills that are necessary for college success. Just as good leaders use leadership skills to lead their team, employees, or country, students should also use the same strategies to ensure their success and that of other students under their leadership. As a college student, the demands one faces are different from the demands of high school. Students must embark upon their college career without the assistance or oversight of adult supervision, as was the case in high school. They must help themselves and other students to chart a course and maneuver through the rigors that college demands. It is also important that leaders lead themselves as well, as those he or she leads, to do what is right.
Motivation is a leadership skill students will need to drive and push them to study, and complete assignments. This is also a beneficial skill for students who want to lead, organize, and establish clubs, and organizations on campus. One must have the ability to motivate and ignite a passion in others to produce and create.
In a college environment, it is important that one uses effective communication to live, flourish, and thrive in a diverse and concentrated atmosphere such as that on a college campus. Poor communication skills can cause friction among students and can lead to unhealthy, harmful relationships.
It is not always necessary that one assumes the role of leader, but it is important that he or she uses leadership skills to help navigate their college experience to help maximize his or her opportunity for success. Many leaders are borne on college campuses where they learn to hone and perfect their skills.
