Why I Chose to Major in Biology Pre-Med

From a young age, I’ve always found myself fascinated by the human body—not just in the way it functions, but in how intricate and intelligent it is. I remember being a child asking endless questions about why people got sick, how bones healed after breaking, or why hearts beat faster when we’re scared. As I got older, those questions evolved into a deeper curiosity and sense of purpose: I didn’t just want to understand the human body, I wanted to use that understanding to help others. This is why I plan to major in Biology Pre-Med when I go to college. This path offers the knowledge, experience, and foundation I need to pursue a career in medicine—a field that combines science, compassion, service, and problem-solving in one of the most powerful and human-centered ways possible.

The decision to pursue this major isn’t something I arrived at overnight. It’s the result of years of reflection, personal experiences, and academic exploration. In high school, biology quickly became one of my favorite subjects. I loved learning about how cells communicate, how organs function, and how the tiniest mutations in DNA can lead to diseases that affect an entire person’s quality of life. The more I learned, the more invested I became—not just in biology itself, but in understanding how that knowledge could translate to real-world medical solutions. Biology felt like a window into the human experience, and I knew I wanted to keep exploring it in greater depth.

Outside of the classroom, I was influenced by the healthcare experiences of people around me. I’ve seen loved ones struggle with chronic conditions and experience moments of vulnerability that left lasting impressions on me. I’ve witnessed both the strengths and the shortcomings of our healthcare system—moments where doctors changed lives, and moments where people fell through the cracks. These experiences opened my eyes to the fact that medicine is not just about prescribing medication or performing surgeries—it’s about listening, advocating, and being a steady hand when someone feels uncertain, afraid, or alone. It made me realize that I want to be more than just a student of science; I want to be someone who stands in those critical moments with others, using my knowledge to bring them clarity and care.

Majoring in Biology Pre-Med also represents my commitment to hard work and long-term goals. I’m fully aware that the Pre-Med path is not easy—it demands dedication, discipline, and resilience. But those qualities are part of why I’m drawn to it. I’m the kind of person who embraces challenges and sees them as opportunities to grow. I know that every difficult course, late-night study session, and high-pressure exam will bring me one step closer to a future where I can truly make a difference. I don’t just want to get through the major—I want to immerse myself in it, take advantage of every lab, research opportunity, and hands-on experience that comes my way.

What excites me most about this path is the future it leads to. I see myself eventually becoming a physician who not only treats patients but also helps bridge the gaps in healthcare access, especially in underserved communities. I’m passionate about health equity, and I believe that everyone—regardless of background, income, or location—deserves high-quality care. As a Biology Pre-Med student, I hope to lay the groundwork for this vision by learning the science, ethics, and communication skills I’ll need to serve diverse populations with empathy and excellence.

In addition to academics, I also plan to get involved in student organizations, volunteer work, and internships that allow me to build connections with others who are passionate about healthcare. I believe that collaboration, mentorship, and community service are just as important as what happens inside a lecture hall. I want to be part of a community of learners who are committed to not only growing in knowledge, but also in character.

Choosing Biology Pre-Med as my major is more than just selecting a field of study—it’s choosing a life of purpose, service, and constant learning. It’s saying yes to a path that challenges me intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. And it’s the first step in becoming the kind of person I’ve always dreamed of being: someone who uses their talents to help others live longer, healthier, and happier lives.
