Global Warming by Muse - December 2017 Scholarship Essay

For the past 50 years, the climate has been changing. Experts see trends of accelerating change in the Earth’s climate. This could be the cause of many things. Global warming is when carbon dioxide and other pollutants called greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are any gaseous compound in the atmosphere that is capable of absorbing infrared radiation. There are many causes of global warming but the effects are much more devastating.
One example that shows the effects of global warming is the melting of ice caps. The extra heat trapped in the atmosphere is causing our ice caps to melt over time. As the ice caps melt, the sea level rises. If we continue with this, our land will begin to be covered by water. If we continue to create greenhouse gases, the sea level will rise enough that half of Florida will be under water (NASA).
Global warming is also damaging our ecosystems by causing various effects on the migration patterns of animals. Some butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have moved farther north or to cooler areas due to the sudden heat and climate change (Nat Geo). As the ice caps are melting marine life and life on land are constantly migrating because their ecosystems are being destroyed by the unfair climates. Polar Bears are now endangered because their habitat on the ice caps is melting away (Nat Geo ). Narwhals, long-toothed whales living in the Arctic, are a very vulnerable species during this era of climate change because they depend on sea ice to hunt for food.
Our world is trying to find ways to fight global warming. The United Nations came together in the summer of 2017, forming an alliance called the Paris Agreement. This included the endorsement of 159 nations. Their main goal is to stop the earth’s climate change (UNFCC ). A goal many people agree should be a priority. The Paris Agreement wants the public to know what is happening to our climate and how we can change what’s happening in today’s environment. They focus on the goal to stop greenhouse emissions and improve everyday life so we are not polluting the air but still have the efficiency to drive cars and live our everyday lives.
There are also many ways we as a human race can stop the greenhouse emissions. We can do that by having slight modifications in our everyday lives. Stopping pollution and making this world a better place. Inventing new technology to help better our world and climate. If this continues we could lose many species and face many more consequences. We need to know ways to help cultivate our planet to go back to its ways of normal temperatures. There are many ways to stopping greenhouse emissions. If every American drove 10 miles less every week, our greenhouse emissions could go down drastically. It only takes one person to encourage others to do the same to stop greenhouse gases.
The Human race is also suffering from climate change. Horrible record-breaking hurricanes have been hitting huge coastline cities and causing major floods and death of a large number of people (Nat Geo). Some African countries have been having devastating droughts. For example, Ethiopia which is a country for having lots of rainfall has had drastic changes in the climate with droughts lasting years. Somalia has been undergoing a horrible drought which is uncommon for the country. Hurricanes and droughts will have a serious change in the next few years. Scientists predict that there will be cities going underwater, under snow, or in a drought.
Furthermore, we should start making a change in our world. Make a real change. Scientists claim it is the small changes that turn into huge movements and make our world an Eco-friendly place. Programs like “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” are to encourage others to stop the buildup of greenhouse gasses (CFF). Various household appliances have been invented to help stop air pollutants from getting into our atmosphere. Certain cars have been invented to help an everyday person from creating fewer pollutants. There are so many ways to stop greenhouse gas build up. People should not have an excuse to not help our world be more environmentally cautious. If you change one part of your life and substitute it with an Eco-friendly initiative we can cut down on greenhouse emissions.
