Personal Statement by Murraya - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Well here goes everything. My name is Murraya Townes I was born March 11th, 1999 and I am a Pisces. My parents Murray and Erika Townes were married by the time I was born. My mom though she had a child the age of 16. She was determined not to be a statistic. She was going to school full time and worked two jobs as a single mother. Her determination and drive pushes me to do better. My dad was always a hard-working individual, a astonishing businessman and still is but, now it's a little bit different. In 2010, my dad was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He has temporarily gone blind twice (one time in each eye) he also has involuntary muscle spasms regularly. My father had to get cortisone shots so much to decrease pain caused by his illness his right hip deteriorated, forcing him to have a hip replacement at the age of 40. He is no longer able to work. My dad also suffers from alcoholism which can make him aggressive at times but never physically abusive.  My dad illnesses and him being retired has caused our money to become sparse which puts stress on the household. Tension does run high seemingly more often than not. However, we all have a struggle but, it’s what we do and how we handle the struggle that sets each individual apart from one another. My parents do the best with what they got and give us what they can and we are appreciative.
During my years in high school, I was apart of the chorus and drama department as well as the Marching Hornets which is our marching band. I can play the viola and the violin. I used to be a head coach of a local organizations cheerleading team their ages ranging from 4 to 14. I am currently at Clinton Gymnastics Academy.
My future plans are to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. I plan to study the Bakery and Pastry Arts. I would also like to earn my bartending license. My ultimate goal is to own my own business called “Sweet Thang Bakery and Bar” in New York or New Jersey and eventually expand it and open up another location in San Francisco.
