An Achievable New Year's Resolution by Msimbi - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
After the holidays, sometime after December, many of us come to the end of the year having broken the resolution's we made the previous year, and as the end of December rolls around we may look back at the year feeling dismayed and regretful that our plans did not turn out the way we wanted them too. Inevitably, we go into January reviving our sometimes-vague resolutions. We hope we can keep our annual vows to treat our family and friends better, to exercise more, fight and worry less and on and on. Sometimes we keep our New Year's resolutions and other times we forget what they were, halfway through the year.
Still, a New Year's resolution is much easier to follow through with if one has realistic goals they are trying to achieve. That is why this year; my New Year's resolution is to focus and work on my degree, in order to graduate in the next two years.
I realize that this resolution is a complex undertaking, but I believe that I can attain these goals if I continuously take steps toward my goal. Something that will help me to achieve this goal is to maintain a schedule. I may need to wake up around the same time everyday, eat my meals at around the same time each day, be productive in studying throughout the day. I will need to make sure that I allow myself some time to rest and maintain a healthy diet.
I also believe that support is vital when trying to achieve these goals, and keep my resolutions. It is less of a burden to achieve these goals when I am accountable to someone else and have people I can come to when in need of advice or support.
We all need community and moral support, as we are social beings, and if we are working together, we are able to accomplish more. We can stick to our commitments, we can learn from each other, and instead of dreading the coming year, we are more likely to look forward to a brighter future.
