Harmony in Finance: A Transformational Melody for Chicago's South Side by Moses - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

Beyond merely pursuing a finance major, I envisage a transformative journey that leads to a symphony of change, with my community, the South Side of Chicago, at its center. To me, finance is more than just a subject to study; it's a tool that can make a difference, particularly for people going through what I saw as my own upbringing's financial hardships.

My mission is to raise financial literacy on the South Side, and it is this passion that drives me while I negotiate the complexities of finance. This is a personal goal to equip people in my community with the information and resources they need to escape the cycles of poverty, not merely an academic endeavor. In addition to being a finance student, I consider myself as a change agent who promotes financial independence and resilience.

The significance of financial literacy as a basic right is one of the resounding elements in my worldview. I can really imagine myself returning to the community centers and schools and imparting knowledge on investment, debt management, and budgeting. Giving South Side youth the tools for financial independence is the goal; education should not be limited to textbooks but should also include life skills that will help them have safe and secure futures.

Outside of the classroom, my goals in finance are closely linked to helping out small South Side businesses. I picture myself contributing to programs that give my neighborhood members vital access to money and give their entrepreneurial ambitions a chance to come true. It's not only about achieving personal financial success; it's also about starting a chain reaction that boosts employment, fosters communal pride, and accelerates economic growth.

My journey has left me with a vivid picture of stories being told in the South Side, rather than just a far-off dream. The single parent is acquiring financial literacy and ensuring a secure future for their family. It's the aspirant business owner transforming a hobby into a company with the assistance and guidance they require. These are real, authentic stories that constitute the core of my mission: to write a song that turns obstacles related to money into opportunities for my community.

My Finance major in this symphony of social development is more than simply a degree; it's a pledge to my heritage, a mission to improve the South Side, and a conviction that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed. I am a conductor of change, weaving the threads of financial knowledge into the fabric of a stronger, more empowered community, as I negotiate the intricate notes of capital markets and investment strategies. Every step I take on my personal financial path represents a note in a melody of resiliency, hope, and prosperity for the place I am happy to call home.
