Why Abroad? by Moriah - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Although to some it is important to study abroad and be immersed in another country and their culture, for other people the idea of studying abroad is not only something they may not want to do, but also something that may not be possible. The idea of going across the world and experiencing a new world is beautiful and a great experience. For some, studying abroad changes their life. Although the idea of being abroad is wonderful, it should not be required. The idea of leaving ones home and country for an extended period of time is close to impossible for some people. It would be understandable if someone didn't want to go because they were nervous or not excited, but then were still required to leave and to pus themselves. However, for something to be required it must be something close to everyone is capable of doing. Some families have family members with serious illnesses and other issues. Requiring students of those families to get up and leave for an entire semester is unrealistic and unfair.
On top of illness and other issues, studying abroad is a huge financial commitment. Even if a school offered to pay for the program and airline fees, once a person gets across the country there are still so many other costs that comes in to play. It is already difficult enough for some families to afford a higher education, having them pay for something as enormous as studying abroad is just impracticable. Studying abroad is something many wish to do, and should have to opportunity to do so, but to make it required is just unfair and unmanageable. Studying abroad definitely should be something that more advertised and promoted, but it is unrealistic for it to be required.
