My Art Teacher Made Me Take Portfolio Development by Morgen - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

When you walk into a class with only five other students and your teacher sits down and says, "Well, I guess that's everyone!", you start to wonder why you are there. Portfolio Development was a class my school just started offering this past year. My art teacher, whom I was fairly close with, told me that if I were to take an art class, I had to take this one. I signed up for this class thinking it would be fairly decent because it was an art class, and I love art. What I did not realize was that Portfolio Development was similar to an art study hall, but with a twist. There was a max student cap at six students, which meant that the teacher would be able to watch your every move. This class was not exactly what I thought it was, to say the least.

I began the year out almost dreading the class. This class was my fifth out of the day, which was when I was most tired. It was one class after lunch and two before the end of the day. My teacher seemed to sense this from me, as he has known me since the sixth grade. He tried his best to flood me with creativity and ideas. It may have taken a lot of effort, but eventually the wheels started turning.

I decided what I wanted to do as a career was game design. It was a major offered at all three of the art schools I was looking at. I did a bunch of studying on the major during class, and my teacher often gave me pointers on how to prepare myself for this kind of major. Game design consists of a lot of personal creativity and being able to make your own characters. By the end of my course, I had enrolled in a summer course at the Academy of Art University for character creation and made many of my own original characters and scenes.

Because of the class my teacher made me take, I was able to decide on what I wanted to do in college and be passionate about. I have more time now to prepare myself for the college courses I will be taking next year. The class overall has made me closer friends with the other five that were in my class, and I know my teacher is anticipating seeing me go far.
