Opening Doors on the Path of Life with Leadership Skills by Morgan (Rhemi) - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Going to college means that you are taking charge of your life. You will be making crucial decisions that set you on a path for your future career, family, and other aspects of your life that you wouldn’t think about as a high school graduate such as how your weight is affected by an abundance of ramen noodles. It is true that we hear everyday that we are helped out in college by so and so program, however, going to college means that you have to start helping yourself. By helping yourself and taking charge of your life, you develop important leadership skills that will help you get good grades, coordinate with others, and become a successful young adult.
When some people look at college they think parties or studies. Having good leadership skills will help you make wise decisions when it comes down to choosing how your night is going to go. Being a good leader to yourself is just as important as being a good leader to others. If you lead yourself in a good direction, you will be in a good place to help others. Getting good grades is a big indication of your leadership skills in college. To get good grades one must learn to make sacrifices and put off immediate gratification in exchange for life time gratification later on down the road. Also, when people look to you as a leader, they look for credibility. Having good grades is an indication that you are credible as well as dedicated to what you decide to do.
Once you have mastered leading yourself in a good direction, it is crucial to help others. In college there will always be clubs, group discussions, and other leadership opportunities where people will look towards a leader to help organize different ideas and produce a synthesis of everybody’s work. Having the leadership skills to organize a group does take practice; albeit, the rewards are numerous. In the future, you might get that job that you desperately wanted because of your superior leadership skills, or your teacher might give you a higher grade than those who sit back and watch. I had a teacher who always used to tell me that life is like a path but with leadership you open doors along the way to other possibilities. I feel like this principle she taught me could be very well applied to young adults who are coming into college with a world of possibilities open to them, they just have to try.
College could just be chalked up to study, eat, sleep, repeat, but there is so much more. When young adults go to college they should find a balance between grades, healthy meals, sleep, and most importantly fun. Having a well rounded life that allows you to do multiple activities shows that you have lead yourself in a good direction. You will not only feel great but other people will look to you as an example to live by. There is a crucial link between leadership and success which I think that many people don’t realize. Many people think that the other person will step up and pull everybody with them, but if you decide to stand up and be a leader and a strong example, chances are, your life as a young adult will be the greatest you will ever have.
Having leadership skills strongly reflects who you are as a person. Others can see that you have leadership skills through your grades, how you help others, and by your overall lifestyle, but the person who is the most affected by your leadership is you.
