The Well Known Problem Known as Procrastination by Morgan - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

When it comes to completing school work at home such as; essays, notes, or lab reports, I face a well known problem known as procrastination. It is not difficult to become distracted by technology, hobbies, and events with family and friends. Even with subjects I am passionate about, I find myself becoming easily distracted by things around me. However, when I complete homework in my study hall class at school, I get much more of my work done. In study hall, I am not surrounded by the things that are distracting at home. Excessive talking and cell phones are not allowed. My New Year resolution is to avoid procrastination by finding a way to study without becoming distracted by technology, hobbies, and events with family and friends.
The culture in which we live involves a lot of social media and new technology that makes it easier to communicate with friends. However, this can take away from more important things such as studying. While studying, it is important that a cell phone, laptop, etc. is not around you or is turned off. When studying while these devices are on hand, it is easy to become distracted by looking at a text message that has just been received or sending a quick snapchat to a friend. My goal for this year is to eliminate any distraction caused by technology while studying so that I do not procrastinate all of my work until the last minute. This will result in a better focus on the material I am working with and will help me to remember it quicker and for a longer period of time.
Hobbies are an important thing to have, especially for teenagers, but sometimes it can easily infringe on schoolwork. I find myself thinking too much on what book I want to read next or new ideas for an art project while studying. All of my art supplies and art pieces sit in my room and just catching a glance of an unfinished project sets my mind on a mission to think of something I could add or how to complete it. However, I can easily solve this problem by moving to a new space apart from where my art supplies and books are. Out of sight, out of mind right?
As a teenager in high school, I constantly want to go out with my friends to watch the latest movie or go shopping at the mall. If I have a bunch of homework I need to complete, I want to wait until after I hang out with my friends; however, time runs out faster than I realize. I can avoid this kind of procrastination by scheduling times to meet with my friends that are convenient for my schoolwork. By doing this, I allow myself time to complete most, if not all, of the work I have before going out with my friends. This way, it will be harder to procrastinate because I would allow myself plenty of time to do what needs to be done.
By finding ways to help bad habits when it comes to schoolwork, it becomes easier to make good grades. Procrastination is a habit that just creates more stress for the student, because as time runs out, there is more pressure to get it done. When there is little time to complete something, it is more likely to be filled with errors because time has not been given to fully focus on the work, but to get it done just so that it can be turned in on time. By making these changes in the New Year, I will relieve added stress from schoolwork and overall make better grades because my work will be completed on time with few errors.
