The best advice is learned by Morgan - July 2025 Scholarship Essay
Advice is like snow- the softer it falls, the longer it dwells upon, and the deeper it sinks into the mind.- Samuel Taylor Coleridge. As I embarked on my journey in college and adulthood, I was given many pieces of advice. Always be mindful of your surroundings, stay focused on your studies, and make good decisions. Although the advice was useful, I wish it had prepared me for what was to come. If I had any advice for upcoming college students, it would be not to allow disappointment to set you back. My first few weeks of college were a whirlwind of firsts and emotions. I was excited to join clubs and organizations. With this being said, I wanted to join a freshman organization for young women acclimating to collegiate life. I met the young women from the organization and attended events hosted by them. I thought I had found a place for me to belong. So I applied to join the organization and was selected to attend a private meeting. At this meeting, I was asked questions about why I wanted to join the organization and how I would fit into it as a freshman. After the meeting, I felt a pit in my stomach, I felt as if something was wrong and I couldn’t shake the feeling of impending dread. Weeks later the pit in my stomach would double in size when I found out that I was not selected to join the organization. To say I was heartbroken and devastated was an understatement. Unfortunately, it took me a full semester to not have a visceral reaction at the sight of the girls who interviewed me. Additionally, it reshaped my perception of who I was and how I allowed disappointment to set me back. For this reason, I picked myself up from the bootstraps and began to branch out into other groups. Once I didn’t allow disappointment to consume me, I was able to live my life on my terms.
