My Grandmother’s Impact by Morgan - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

Someone in my life that I believe has had a positive impact on my education is my grandmother. She is the reason why I go to school and work hard in everything I do. The things I have accomplished would not have happened because of my grandmother. She has encouraged me to read after school and on weekends, encouraged my mom to take me to the library, required me to complete work in math books, work on math and reading problems during the summer, and even bought school-related games to not only make learning educational but fun at the same time. Those little things mattered and helped me. The stories she told me about her growing up and her experiences of going to school not only illustrated the difference in the education system then in comparison to now but also gave me a new perspective.

My grandmother impacted me through her drive and ability to keep going when things get tough. That’s something she was able to teach me at a young age. With her sharing her story, I wanted to work hard to achieve my goals and dreams. Because my grandmother stayed on top of me regarding my studies, I became motivated and inspired to continue - even when I didn’t want to or when I felt like giving up on myself.

In the future I want to become a social worker and help people with their hardships and tough situations. No matter how bad things may go, people deserve a second chance. My grandmother has always been the one to tell me that. I never thought about that until I came to the conclusion of wanting to help people and help get their lives back on track. I dedicate this all to her. I want to show her how much she’s helped me and shape me to be the woman I am today.
