Tommorow Is Not Promised by Morgan - December 2022 Scholarship Essay

People always say, "tomorrow is not promised and do not take today for granted." I never deeply understood the meaning of that statement until the last month of my life. My grandfather was admitted into the emergency room for an infection in his leg. Less than a week later, he is in the ICU after an open heart surgery, sedated and on a ventilator with a collapsed lung and kidney failure.

At that point in time, no one in my family knew what was going to happen next. When I heard the news from my mom everything went silent. I did not have the ability to process and think about what I had heard. The next week was tiring for my family as he continued to stay sedated and experienced little progress. Unfortunately a lot of us became despondent during this time due to my grandfather still in poor conditions. At the end of that week, my mother and grandmother conversed with the doctors about continuing intense care or pulling the plug. It was a difficult decision, but they honored my grandfather's wishes and agreed to pull the plug in the next few days. My grandfather miraculously woke up the next day the healthiest he had been in two weeks. Today, he was transported into a different care facility to participate in rehab and become stronger.

My family went through a lot during this time period, but it taught them and myself a valuable lesson, that tomorrow is not promised. Almost losing a loved one put things into perspective for me and showed me that life is fragile. Every day that I have on earth is a precious gift. I started to truly understand what people mean when they say that statement. Now that I understand and have learned this lesson, I can apply it to my everyday life going into the new year.

This lesson will push me to do better in some of my daily tasks that benefit myself and my family. Simple activities such as going to the gym or cleaning up around the house may seem simple, but are very important. Not having tomorrow promised will motivate me to finish a task today instead of pushing it off. It will also push me to be the best I can be for myself and others every day. This lesson will affect my goals in my social life. Making amends with people is so much more important to me now, because they may not be here tomorrow. Striving to be the best friend or partner that I can will be a daily goal for myself now that I know there may not be a tomorrow.

Not knowing if there is going to be a tomorrow can be apprehensive for most people, however I believe that it is a motivation to do better today. Furthermore, I believe that it is a reminder to not take today for granted and it is so important to be grateful for waking up. Pitbull also uses this way of thinking, he wrote in a song, “For all we know, we might not get tomorrow” which is an inspiring driving factor for everyone.
