I Will Not be a Snowflake by Morgan - June 2019 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my years of elementary school, middle school, and my current years of high school, I have had many teachers. Every year I was taught something new, but it was not only academic related. My past teachers taught me helpful lessons that not only apply to life as a student, but also to life as an adult. During elementary school, I learned how to add and subtract numbers which is needed in school, but I was also taught how to get along with others and how to properly treat other people which is needed in life. Although I have learned many important lessons throughout the years, there is one that really made an impact on my life.

One teacher in particular always said “do not be a snowflake”. Many people might hear this and think it means you can not be emotional and that you are not allowed to have feelings, but I believe that it really means do not take the small things to heart. We cannot spend our life harping on something that only makes a small difference. This lesson not only helps me exceed in life, but it helps me succeed as a student. During my middle school years I would constantly worry about my grades and I would let small things stress me out, even in high school I continue to do so. However, when I do over stress about the small stuff, I think back to my teacher saying “do not be a snowflake” and then I remember I should not sweat the small stuff.

Thanks to my history teacher constantly saying this, I have overcome stress from school work, such as homework and projects. I have also overcome stress from working. Being in high school and working after school can put a lot of stress on a student, but with the right mind set, I did not let the stress get to me. Therefore, my past teacher not only helps me get through school, but he helps me get through tough times outside of school.
