Imagination in Education by Morgan - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
My senior yearbook quote would be “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution” by Albert Einstein. The first time I heard this quote it was on the television show Criminal Minds. The character who spoke this quote is Spencer Reid. His character is portrayed as a genius. However, he still believes in imagination is much more important than all of his knowledge combined.
This quote is important to me since I believe that education and continued learning are a good thing. However, it is important to remember that the most successful people can use their creativity with their knowledge to change the world. I also want to be successful in changing even one person’s world. By changing one person’s world or perspective, I hope to inspire them to do the same and change another person’s until the domino effect occurs.
Through my time in various engineering and agriculture classes, I have learned that in the real world it is not so much of what you know but what you do with it. In order to solve problems, a person must be able to use the knowledge they have in an innovative way.
As a future career, I intend to be a veterinarian. In veterinary school, I will receive an enormous amount of knowledge from experienced professors. Even so, as I enter into practice I am bound to come across unforeseen issues. Surgical techniques will be taught and practiced but every animal is individual and unique leading to varied solutions every time.
Not only does this quote paint a picture of my future hopes but it also illustrates my high school career. When I learn something, I try to imagine the practical applications of it in order to remember it better. This also helps me connect subjects like algebra and chemistry to each other. My imagination also carries over into my extracurriculars. In one organization, I must be flexible and creative in order to create a new board game. In another, I must come up with entertaining yet informative assemblies. New fundraising ideas must be thought of to keep yet another organization going.
